do see folder system

How do I see the folder system

When I try to traverse the folder system to figure it out, I will get an access denied type thing which tells me to edit permissions .. then when I do, Windows Explorer hangs and wants to close ..
Is there some way to have a good look at the way the folder system is layed out in Vista 5308? Or is this just not possible? What gives with the file system?
Thanks.

I go back and forth throughout the windows folder without any permission errors and no explorer hangs. 5365 -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

Must remember, that being an "administrator" in a User Group means very little. If you logout and sign in with the "administrator" username, and by default no password, you should be able to do anything and everything :o)
Remember, there's only 1 real administrator on Vista by default, and it's username is "administrator" :o)

What exact folders can't you travers into with UAP enabled?
I'll do some digging to make sure what you are seeing is expected.
Thanks

Hey Ed,
I was assuming his issue traversing through folders was related to UAP Permissions. I turned on UAP in 5365, did what Stephen was doing and I have not encountered any permission issues, except for normal UAP/Allow warnings and this is under the Windows folder which is an expected behaviour. -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

The file system is just NTFS/Windows with some name changes. Documents and Settings is named Users. All Users is named Public. The "My" folders don't have "My" anymore. Open any folder and click Folders at the bottom of the Navigation pane at left. Then you can navigate through everything. Or click Start, choose Computer and work your way down from the top of any drive.

Don't know if this is relevant either, but I found Explorer restarting a lot after I connected an external hard drive to the USB port. When I disconnected it, things seemed better. Now that drive is plugged into another computer on the network with its root folder shared and I can get to it no problem.

'Rebooted into safe mode, logged on as Administrator, made Administrator owner of everything from the root on down. Ugly hack, but now I can whip up and down the folders.
The
problem for me was that many of these folders listed are not folders but shortcuts to folders. The actual folders I could get into .. but not via the shortcuts which flipped me the access denied bird. And when I went to the propertiers of the shortcuts they gave me the propertyies of the folders they were shortcuts to .. unlike regular shortcuts.

Hey again Ed,
Ok, just accessed the System 32 folder, no issues, the UAP Window is probably the equivalent of the accessing a system folder warning you get in Windows XP, its not a reoccurring message. Well I will do a clean install today and recheck - maybe something happened. I installed Vista first then later another OS on another partition. Maybe it is the way the bloody thing "indexes" .. but I certainly did not otherwise do anything e.g. drag a shortcut over or somesuch. Nope.

There is still a Documents and Settings folder in Vista. It is hidden and it is not really a folder or a shortcut. It is a junction point point to Users. That is why the properties will show you the properties of the foler it points to instead of the shortcut properties. It's also why you can't navigate into it using the default permission settings. Navigating into junction points with explorer can be recursive so they disabled that access. I don't see why they don't just send to where it points and leave it at that, but this is how it was explained to me.

The problem for me was that many of these folders listed are not folders but shortcuts to folders. The actual folders I could get into .. but not via the shortcuts which flipped me the access denied bird. And when I went to the propertiers of the shortcuts they gave me the propertyies of the folders they were shortcuts to .. unlike regular shortcuts.
Thanks for all your replies.

Is there some way to have a good look at the way the folder system is layed out in Vista 5308? Or is this just not possible? What gives with the file system?
Thanks.

'Did a clean install on a blanked then re-partitioned/reformatted drive and the odd behaving short cuts were still there. The attached .png file is an example screenshot. I get these "shortcuts" if I completely unhide hidden files and hidden system files. Build 5308
Just for your information .. :)
